Data convention comments

Potential irrigation water use (PIrrUse): Potential irrigation water use (water consumed). The water consumed (TVeg + ECanop + ESoil), given unlimited water supply, in addition to water from precipitation (soil moisture) for optimal plant growth during the growing season. Conveyance losses should not be included in this number. Optimal plant growth occurs when actual evapotranspiration of a crop is equal to its potential evapotranspiration (here using the FAO definition, see http://www.fao.org/nr/water/aquastat/water_use/index4.stm).

Potential irrigation water withdrawals (PIrrWW): Potential irrigation water witdrawn given unlimited water supply, i.e. water withdrawn when calculating PIrrUse. Total amount of water withdrawn from lakes/reservoirs/rivers/groundwater taking into account leakages and all other losses.

Actual irrigation water use (AIrrUse): Actual irrigation water consumed (TVeg + ECanop + ESoil) in addition to water from precipitation (soil moisture), taking water availability into account.

Actual irrigation water withdrawals (AIrrWW): Actual irrigation water witdrawn given limited water supply, i.e. water withdrawn when calculating AIrrUse. Total amount of water withdrawn from lakes/reservoirs/rivers/groundwater taking into account leakages and all other losses.

 

Green water consumption on irrigated cropland (IrrigCropUseGreen): Sum of evaporative fluxes (TVeg + ECanop + ESoil) from rain water over irrigated cropland during the entire year (including fallow period).

Green water consumption on rainfed cropland (RainfCropUseGreen): Sum of evaporative fluxes (TVeg + ECanop + ESoil) from rain water over rainfed (non-irrigated) cropland during the entire year (including fallow period).

Green water consumption pasture (PastureUseGreen): Sum of evaporative fluxes (TVeg + ECanop + ESoil) from rain water over pasture during the entire year.
